May 5th, 2012

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has confirmed to Reuters that its future electric cars will be badged as BMWs. This contradicts some earlier rumors that the automaker would revive another brand such as Triumph or Isetta for its electric vehicles.

The company will stick with its existing BMW replica herve leger, MINI and Rolls-Royce marques, but Reithofer revealed that the board has voted to create a sub-brand for electric vehicles. This new sub-brand will be similar to BMW’s seperate marketing of the “M” line of vehicle replica herve leger, will be targeted at urban drivers and include a two wheeler. The first of these new vehicles will likely start appearing sometime around 2012-13.

You Can Handle the Truth Aaron Sorkin to Appear O

May 17th, 2012

Add another speaker to the stellar list for the 10th D: All Things Digital conference, which is taking place in a little more than a month: Aaron Sorkin.

For those who have followed the long and award-filled career of the well-known playwright and Hollywood writer, it’s an astonishing litany of success — from “A Few Good Men” to “The West Wing” to “Moneyball” — filled with more unusually clever lines than anyone has ever penned.

But, most famously for tech, Sorkin also wrote the screenplay (and also won an Academy Award) for “The Social Network Office Visio Key,” about the rise of Facebook and its unusual co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The film caused a lot of controversy in Silicon Valley over its depiction of Zuckerberg as an evil genius of sorts, of course, but few can argue that it was not a corker of a movie.

We are excited to talk to Sorkin about that experience, as well as his take on the state of entertainment in the digital age. He’s about to debut a new HBO show in June called “The Newsroom,” set behind the scenes at a cable news show. It deals with the massive changes roiling through the media industry and it begins Cheap windows 7 key, natch, with a viral video.

Sorkin is also set to make his Broadway debut as a librettist for the upcoming musical “Houdini.” And he’s also working on another new movie, based on a book about the downfall of Sen. John Edwards, which he’ll adapt, produce and direct.

Sorkin will be joined at D10 — which will be held in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., just south of Los Angeles, at the end of May — by a litany of major players in tech and media, including: Apple CEO Tim Cook Windows 7 Serial, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz and many more.

And we still have more speakers to come, but until then, here’s the famous line from “The Social Network” — something about a billion dollars:

Trenton school board picks new superintendent to o

May 17th, 2012

Michael Mancuso/The TimesFrancisco Duran met with the public in the auditorium of the School Administration building on N. Clinton Ave on Monday afternoon, May 14th, 2012.

TRENTON — The Trenton school board selected Francisco Duran, an assistant superintendent in Philadelphia, to be the next superintendent of the Trenton School District in a meeting that until midnight.

Duran was one of three finalists interviewed last night and a closed-door session of the school board went on for hours before a vote was finalized.

“There were so many considerations, and the vote was very close replica watches,” Trenton school board president Toby Sanders said this morning. “I think that there was confidence in his preparedness. He showed an extraordinary ability to listen. He has an exceptionally strong experience in education and leadership.”

The decision was made with a 5-3 vote that took place just before midnight. The board selected Duran after interviewing all three candidates that had been up for the job behind closed doors earlier in the day. They also took into account the input of community members, teachers, parents and Mayor Tony Mack in making the decision.

“The board is very proud of the talent and the diversity of the candidates that were finalists,” said Sanders, who abstained from the vote because his wife works in the district. “The decision was actually very difficult because the candidates were so different, but we have high hopes for Mr. Duran’s career and future here, and for our own destiny under his leadership.”

Duran is currently an assistant superintendent in Philadelphia, overseeing 44 schools.

“He seemed to really have his finger on operational issues in his level of responsibility,” Sanders said. “It was a close vote replica watches, but the board is confident that he will be able to lead us to address our most important challenges.”

Sanders listed the average reading level of Trenton’s school children and the culture of expectation in the district as the two major issues he believes Duran will be able to tackle. He said he hoped to see noticeable results in those areas in the next two or three years.

Community members vetted the three candidates. A group that also included Lucy Feria, the multilingual program coordinator and a former regional superintendent in Philadelphia, and Dale Caldwell, a businessman who has been deputy commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs and a member of the state school board — during a public meeting yesterday afternoon. The candidates were chosen from a field of 180 applicants for the job.

At the meeting Mondayafternoon, Duran talked about his experience working with parents, saying he held monthly roundtable discussions and helped implement an online system called FamilyNet, which gave parents access to their children’s records.

He also oversaw a program called Parent University that helped adults work toward their GEDs replica watches, he said.

“It’s about empowering parents to be a part of the system,” Duran said.

Secret Service Veteran Dismisses ‘Blackmail’ Con

May 17th, 2012

(Courtesy Dan Emmett)

Former Secret Service agent Dan Emmett, a 21-year veteran who served under four presidents, disputes claims by some Republican lawmakers that a security detail’s alleged involvement with prostitutes exposed agents to potential blackmail and thereby endangered President Obama.

U.S. officials are actively investigating allegations that a group of 11 members of the Secret Service — agents and uniformed officers — and five members of the military invited prostitutes to their rooms inside a secure area of a Cartagena, Colombia, hotel just hours before Obama was to arrive.

Reps. Peter King, R-N.Y., and Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who chair investigatory congressional committees, have said the behavior opened the men up to being threatened or blackmailed in the future, possibly to access to secure areas or sensitive information.

Emmett called the suggestion an “incredible reach.”

“I spent six years in the CIA after I left the Secret Service and am well familiar with sexual blackmail espionage. It is a tactic, but I just don’t see that here,” he told ABC News.

“The Secret Service is not an intelligence organization, it’s law enforcement,” he said, noting the men were not part of the agency’s presidential protective division, which is closest to the president.

“Moreover, even though the president was going to be staying in the same hotel, the part he would have been in was nowhere close to where these people were or would have been Tattoo Gun Needles,” Emmett said. “With the layers of security surrounding Obama it would not be possible for him or any unauthorized person to get anywhere close.  So blackmail is not an issue, I would totally discount that as being someone’s overactive imagination.

“The people who are talking about blackmail — that’s espionage novel stuff,” he said.

Emmett served as part of the elite presidential protective division during the George W. Bush administration. He also helped protect presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

The Secret Service, Congress and Defense Department are all investigating the Colombia incident for potential violations of the agency’s code of conduct as well as potential risks posed to the president. Those involved could face possible reprimand or firing, if the allegations are true.

“This is not a criminal conduct type of situation, it’s strictly personal conduct How To Tattoo Gun,” Emmett said, noting that prostitution is legal in designated parts of Colombia’s capital.  “Secret Service agents and officers are law enforcement. These guys are badges and guns and so they’re held to a higher standard than the average American would be that’s down in Colombia on vacation.”

Emmett, who is also a former Marine Tattoo Kits Cheap,  said that in his experience on dozens of foreign advance trips to establish security ahead of the president ”things do occur on the road.”

“But as far as something like this, nothing in my time,” he said.

Mr Swan said the government has had to make very significant savings because revenues had been down around $150 billion over five years since the GFC.

May 15th, 2012

A couple of years ago, BMW said it wanted out of the joint engine game with Peugeot. Today Tattoo Supplies, not only are the two companies still sharing powerplants – the PSA engines that go in the Mini and Pugs like the 207 – but BMW’s head has recently stated that the automaker is considering sharing small car platforms with PSA. To that, PSA head Phillipe Varin has gone a step further, saying he’d also like to extend the agreement to things like purchasing, transmissions Tattoo Supplies, and HVAC units.

The quest for Peugeot is to find a way to remain independent to continue to make money doing it. The French automaker expects an operating loss of up to €1.5 billion ($2.25B U.S.) this year, which is less than expected. But the company foresees a return to black next year, and part of the strategy for that would be lowering costs through tie-ups, such as its deal to sell rebranded Mitsubishi i-Mievs.

Nevertheless, it will be BMW that needs to see sense in a stronger PSA union. Items like HVAC units and transmissions – when they work – are anonymous; no one knows or really cares where they come from. As for powertrains, the German firm has spoken before of wanting to lower development costs, especially in the area of small engine development which could help it with its numerous small car initiatives.

Allah’s Atlas

May 14th, 2012

Bloggers are all over the new Atlas of Creation, Islam’s contribution to the anti-evolution cause. Also, how will Hillary Clinton’s cleavage affect her campaign, and why do President Bush’s weekend plans terrify liberals?

Allah’s Atlas: Turkish Islamist Adnan Oktar, going by the name Harun Yahya Discount Chloe Dresses, is peddling what is, by all accounts, a gorgeous book of antiscientific bunkum. Atlas of Creation is his 12-pound Buy Christian Audigier Clothing, 800-page reply to Darwinism that suggests evolution is a sham since, well, species alive today are very much like those alive millions of years ago. No one’s quite sure where Yahya gets the money for these free textbooks, though at least one blogger has a theory.

Muslim Humanist Ali Eteraz writes of Harun Yahya that he “has been stalking Muslim circles in the West for quite some time. I saw his books at every major Muslim bookstore I have ever been to, along with every single Muslim convention.” Eteraz also did some digging into Yahya’s backers and comes up with the following conclusions: “Harun Yahya is most likely a front [update: or ally] for Christian right-wing’s version of Creationism. Funny thing is that Harun Yahya seems to be using the Christianists the same way they are using him.” “American heathen” Hrafnkell at A Heathen’s Day writes: “It’s a shame really, when Islam led the way in science during the early Middle Ages, that they have turned their back on it and embraced unthinking religious fundamentalism instead.”

It’s all “creationism on crack,” writes Bonzai, a commenter at celebrated atheist Richard Dawkins’ Web site. “But it is not the only pseudo science in the Islamic world. Another, even more ludicrous and more influential movement is so called ‘Quranic science’. The proponents claim that the Quran contains all of modern science from general relativity to embryology by torturing meanings into vague Quranic verses. … Unlike creationism and ID, which are basically education lobbies with no influence in research institutions, many otherwise respectible universities in the Arab world have departments on ‘Quranic science’.”

At Evolution Minute, the blog of a radio show by the same name, biologist Shelley Greene and evangelical youth minister Peter share their separate letters addressed to Yahya. Here’s Greene: “If I were you, I wouldn’t expect a high return rate on your promotional effort. Look at France’s weak response. We are just as stubborn and intractable as they are. And honestly, America does not need another variety of religious fundamentalism.” Here’s Williamson: “The Atlas of Creation is an inspiring work, and like the beauty of a cathedral Buy Herve Leger v neck, will lift the spirit of those who enter. Even those who aided and abetted the faithless in the Dover case grudgingly admitted The Atlas of Creation is truly a beautiful book. God works in mysterious ways!”

Hillary Clinton’s seemingly newly discovered cleavage. [Disclosure: Slateis owned by the Washington Post Co.] “Once again Replica BCBG Dresses, she is playing the fashion field,” Givhan writes.

D.C. blogger NewsCat is shocked, shocked: “It’s almost like Hillary is some kind of…woman? What is she doing with those breasts of hers! (I don’t know…talking about education or something…I wasn’t paying attention).”

At lefty Firedoglake, Christy Hardin Smith offers Givhan a few fashionista tips: “A v-neck shell or blouse is slenderizing, as any reader of In Style magazine or browser of People at the hairstylists could tell Ms. Givhan…Women have boobs, which result in cleavage, and sometimes we wear v-neck shirts because we like them, they are comfy on hot days and, frankly, they look nice.  Millions of women wear them.  Including me…right now.”

Inquiring minds want to know: When is it Obama’s turn? Geekesque at DailyKos describes the front-page décolletage treatment as “[f]urther proof that even as Hillary Clinton makes a strong bid to be the most powerful human being on the planet, there will be those who see her as nothing but a pair of jugs. I look forward to the Post’s next article in the series:  ‘Did you see Obama’s bulge?’ And fromGawker: meme: “Thanks, Robin! It Was Probably the Lethal Injection

May 14th, 2012

Teresa Lewis. Christian Audigier Clothes sale

The state of Virginia executed its first female killer since 1912 on Thursday. After putting Teresa Lewis to death by lethal injection, officials shipped her body to the medical examiner for autopsy. Why would you bother to do an autopsy on someone who was executed?

Mostly to make sure the anesthetic worked. A lethal injection comprises a cocktail of drugs designed to bring about a painless death via anesthesia, paralysis Cheap Emilio Pucci Dresses, and cardiac arrest. If the anesthesia fails Buy Bandage dresses, however, the prisoner feels a torturous burning sensation as a lethal dose of potassium chloride enters her bloodstream. The paralysis makes matters worse, since the condemned cannot scream or signal to the executioners that she is in distress. Unless someone monitors the inmate’s brain waves, which some states have tried, the best way to assess the state of anesthesia is by measuring the concentration of anesthetic in the inmate’s blood after death. Studies on human volunteers have shown that a concentration of around 20 mg of thiopental per liter of blood would be significantly higher than you’d need to perform surgery. There may be some variation in how effective the anesthetic is—the stress of being executed can increase requirements, and a prisoner’s past drug use might make her exceptionally tolerant to the anesthetic. But, as a general rule Cheap DKNY Clothes, blood concentrations above 20 mg/L strongly suggest that the prisoner passed away without pain.

Unfortunately Herve Leger sale, most states wait so long to conduct the exam that the results have little value. Blood thiopental concentration drops precipitously after death, and most experts believe you’d need to draw a sample within an hour of passing to know whether the dose was adequate. Few states move that quickly. Even medical examiners who go to the prison rather than waiting for the body to arrive at the morgue rarely get a sample in less than an hour. Perhaps as a result, the autopsy data suggest that the anesthetic is often ineffective. A 2005 paper used these delayed analyses to estimate that 43 percent of inmates suffer through their injections. (The study summoned a storm of opposition.)

Medical examiners do more than draw blood from an executed prisoner. They also examine the site where the intravenous needles were inserted to confirm that they were placed appropriately. Most examiners also check for internal injuries—a sign that someone beat up the prisoner before the execution.

The validity of the drug-dose testing isn’t the only source of controversy. Some states have tried to autopsy executed prisoners over the objections of family members. In December 2009, Tennessee executed Cecil Johnson, then tried to conduct an autopsy even though he had signed an affidavit arguing that it would violate his Baptist faith. Johnson’s body remained in limbo for more than a month Buy Emilio Pucci Dresses, until the state courts prohibited the autopsy.

Ayatollah Khamenei Affirms Election, Warns Demonst

May 13th, 2012

Battle lines are drawn for another intense, potentially bloody day in Tehran, Iran, where protests against alleged government vote-rigging have raged all week. All of the U.S. newspapers lead with yesterday’s “final word” from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, * Iran’s supreme leader, who told a throng at Friday prayer that the election result is final and that the opposition will be held “directly responsible” for the violence the regime will unleash on any further demonstrations. Khamenei condemned killings by pro-government loyalists this week but made it clear that he supports the re-election of incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The crowd “burst into laughter,” the New York Timesreports, when the Ayatollah insisted in his “hard-line” speech that the huge margin between President Ahmadinejad and opposition candidate Mir Hussein Mousavi was too large for foul play. “Perhaps 100,000 votes, or 500,000, but how can anyone tamper with 11 million votes?” The Washington Postcalls Khamenei’s sermon “dramatic,” and the story’s lede focuses on his declaration that the protests are the work of Western nations, including the United States and Britain. The Los Angeles Timesfills in the strange happenings at the end of the speech, when the Ayatollah “began lamenting his physical condition and weeping,” apparently a sort of signal to loyalists to crack down on demonstrators. The Basij, the government’s plainclothes volunteer militia, has “already been deployed to the streets,” the Wall Street Journaladds.

Plans for a Saturday protest seem to be going forward, though the WP notes many opposition Web sites weren’t updated yesterday afternoon, and no one knows whether Mousavi will attend. The WSJ calls the situation a “test of the opposition’s resolve”; whether to continue calling for demonstrations is a difficult decision for Mousavi since the regime has promised violence to any of his supporters it catches in the streets. But whether or not their candidate shows up, many of the “green army” will be there. One 29-year-old woman, who the LAT sawsobbing through Khamenei’s speech, said she would be marching no matter the cost: “This is how countries that have freedom and democracy get it. They have to fight and die for it.”

The Ayatollah’s speech had reverberations in Washington, where both houses of Congress “overwhelmingly” passed resolutions condemning the Iranian government’s violence toward the demonstrators. Republicans used the votes to “press the White House to take sides”—Sen. John McCain said the demonstrators are waiting for a show of U.S. support—but President Obama had no official comment on the speech. “We’re not going to be used as political foils and political footballs in a debate that’s happening by Iranians in Iran,” press secretary Robert Gibbs said. But administration officials said events this weekend—namely whether or not Iran carries out its violent threats—would determine whether the president joins European leaders in a harsher condemnation.

Front-page stories in the WP and LAT report on high unemployment numbers. At above 10 percent Replica Harry Winston Watches sale, the District of Columbia is at its highest unemployment rate since 1983; at 11.5 percent, the state of California is at its highest rate since record-keeping began. Government jobs in D.C. typically keep its population insulated from economic downturns, but the District has a high number of low-income, low-skilled workers who aren’t qualified for most of the new D.C. jobs created under the new administration. (Those positions go to more educated residents of bordering Virginia and Maryland.) California’s unemployment is hitting men especially hard: Three out of four people who have lost their jobs since December 2007 are men Fake Omega Watches, a phenomenon unnamed experts awkwardly call a “mancession.”

Republican Sen. John Ensign is accusing his former mistress’s husband of making “exorbitant demands for cash and other financial benefits,” a story you’ll find only in today’s WP. Ensign’s office said the senator’s revelation of his affair with Cynthia Hampton had nothing to do with her husband’s cash demands but came after Doug Hampton detailed his wife’s affair with Ensign in a letter to Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.

We finally know what was wrong with Apple CEO Steve Jobs: He got a liver transplant in Tennessee a couple of months ago, is recovering well, and is expected to return to work at the end of June, a WSJ front-pager reveals. Jobs, 54, will likely work part-time for a period before resuming his full duties.

NYT film critic A.O. Scott reviews some choice examples of Iran’s “historically rich movie culture,” which has continued to flourish even under the hard-line Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: “You see class divisions Fake Philip Stein Watches for sale, the cruelty of the state, the oppression of women and their ways of resisting it Imitation Bell & Ross Watches, traditions of generosity and hospitality How to buy Replica Richard Mille Watches, and above all a passion for argument.”
